<dcterms:abstract xml:lang="en">This thesis proposes a new angle of approach to study the political appropriation of Norse myths by the British Romantics. While most studies on the subject have described the prevalent role of the gods or Vikings in the national narratives imagined by some of these writers, my perspective on the contrary points to the use of monsters in radical and anti-establishment discourses. The analysis of monstrous figures such as the Midgard Serpent, draugar and jǫtnar in the works of John Thelwall, William Blake, Felicia Hemans, James Hogg as well as William and Mary Howitt, suggests that some Romantics conceived Norse myths as rhetorical tools to formulate narratives of resistance against the authority of the state and British institutions. Under this perspective, the appropriation of Norse myths by radical movements appears as a subversive process in the Romantic period.</dcterms:abstract>
