En effet, l’objectif de ce travail est de jeter les bases d’une sociolinguistique historique en Alsace en suivant le programme théorique de Klaus J. Mattheier (1988, 1999), qui préconise la prise en compte croisée de l’histoire des usages linguistiques, de celle du contact des langues ainsi que de celle de la conscience linguistique. Pour ce faire, un important travail de construction d’un corpus significatif des pratiques sociolinguistiques des locuteurs-scripteurs a été mené, puisqu’il n’en existait pas jusqu'à présent, de manière à pouvoir les rendre visibles. Le relevé et l’analyse des traces et des manifestations du contact des langues constitue l’angle par lequel nous abordons la sociolinguistique historique. Il s’agit de rendre compte des pratiques linguistiques sur le temps long et de les articuler avec les changements sociétaux, dont ils sont constitutifs. Ce travail interroge aussi les limites d’une telle approche, notamment en l’absence de documents couvrant tous les changements sociétaux. This thesis in historical sociolinguistics examines the linguistic practices of Alsatian speakers-writers over the 1681-1914 period. The aim of this work is to lay the foundations for historical sociolinguistics in Alsace, thereby following Mattheier’s (1988, 1999) theoretical programme. He calls for taking into consideration the history of language uses, as well as the history of language contact, and that of language awareness. To that extent, since there existed no significant Alsatian corpus, a major effort has been undertaken in order to devise a comprehensive corpus. It gathers the sociolinguistic practices of speakers-writers and makes it visible and accessible for historical sociolinguistic purposes. This thesis shall focus on the study and analysis of the traces and occurrences of language contact. The paper thus aims at accounting for linguistic practices over time, and links these practices to societal changes they partook in. This thesis also questions the limits of such an approach, especially as these different societal changes often lack documentation and literature altogether.
